The Free State Education Department lost most of it’s scripts at the Albert Moroka High marking centre in Thaba-Nchu after a great storm which impacted on the centre and the department. However, Free State education acted promptly in resolving their issue.
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) managed to recover lost National Senior Certificate scripts that had been lost after the Free State had been hit hard by a storm.
The Free State education department has confirmed that they have counted the scripts, and all scripts were found.
The Albert Moroka High marking centre had received 24 519 scripts for two subjects, namely Accounting P2 and Business Studies P2.
Most scripts were accounted for with one last script needing to be recovered which was a Business Studies P2 script. The script was later found.
Chief Director at the Department of Basic Education, Dr. Rufus Poliah says
If it were not for the sacrifice and quick thinking by the markers and staff, the damage could have been worse. They worked hard to save the scripts and proceeded to work around the clock to locate the scripts which were initially reported to be missing in the chaos that happened during the storm
Poliah commends the province in its efforts of managing the crisis that they were faced with.
A new location was then chosen by the Free State Education department in Bloemfontein. This is where marking is currently taking place, including the capturing of the matriculants’ marks.
The department plans to conclude all of its markings on 22 December 2021.
