Education Department Releases School Calendar for 2022

The Department of Basic Education has recently released the final version of the school calendar for 2022. The calendar gives more details on how the department will break down the 43 week-long school year between all schools in inland and coastal provinces.

The first term of the upcoming school year is set to kick off on 12 January 2022 for inland provinces and on 19 January 2022 for schools in the Coastal provinces, as announced by the Basic Education Department.

Schools in the inland provinces will also be the first to conclude the first term on 17 March followed by the coastal province on 25 March 2022.

All schools in both provincial clusters will share a total of 299 school days over a period of 43 weeks.

Inland Cluster schools include schools that are located in the Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West.

Coastal Cluster schools include schools that are located in Eastern Cape, Kwazulu-Natal, Northern Cape and Western Cape.

Term Dates For Inland Cluster Schools 

First Term: 12 January – 17 March
Second Term: 05 April – 24 June
Third Term:19 July – 30 September
Fourth Term: 11 October – 14 December

Term dates for Coastal Cluster schools

First Term: 19 January – 17 March
Second Term: 5 April – 24 June
Third Term:19 July – 30 September
Fourth Term: 11 October – 14 December

The school year is set to conclude on 15 December 2022 for schools nationwide. These school calendars only apply to all public throughout the country.
