After close to three weeks of processing placements for the 2022 Online Admissions for Grades 1 and 8, the Gauteng Education Department has said that it is edging closer to finalizing the process.
Gauteng’s MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi has stated on Twitter that out of 250 000 applications there are only 27 000 learners to place within the next 24 hours.
The provincial education department had initially planned for the closing date for placements to be on 30 November but extended it to 10 December.
At the time, according to the statement, the department had placed 213 313 out of the 335 091 applications they had received. The number of unplaced applicants is therefore reduced to 121 778 (Grade 1 and Grade 8: 6 459)
They also point out that they are experiencing a high level of pressure on their schools’ intake capacity due to having received a volume of applications.
Parents have also been told that they can lodge an appeal if they are not satisfied with the school at which they have been placed.
The department also identified 10 high-pressure schools during the application period, that received an overwhelming number of applications that exceeded the capacity of learners that they could afford to accommodate.
