As a student, we know that life has an overwhelming amount of responsibilities and having to balance your student life can be quite stressful too. When we embrace many responsibilities of life, we have to consider what is essential and takes priority.

What is self-care?

Self-care is a term that is referred to knowing who you are as a person and identifying your limits.It is about taking the time out to balance your mental, physical and emotional well-being. These aspects work in a way that when one is neglected, the other is affected. Self-care encourages you to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself and set boundaries with others. In other words, you cannot give to others what you are lacking within.  In order to achieve true self-care you need to be consciously aware of your overall well-being.

So often we think about our lives negatively when we can be appreciative of the things that are around us. It is important that you cherish the good memories and hold onto them, even if the unpleasant ones attempt to consume you. Take the time to be still and reflect upon your life. Be alert to your physical health

This is one of the core elements to self-care. We know that the mind and body are linked and it is  important that you check-in with yourself occasionally. It is important to monitor your serotonin levels and keep them balanced to avoid feeling down and depressed.

Learn to say NO

Too often we tend to be pleasing to others which affects your own inner peace or health and goes against the principles of self-care. You need to acknowledge that you are only human and cannot make everyone happy.

Live a healthy lifestyle

One of the important key elements is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Cut out anything that will have a negative impact on your life. Scientists have proven that an adult needs at least 6-8 hours of sleep to be well rested and feel rejuvenated. Ensure that you are getting enough rest so that it does not have an effect on your physical and mental well-being.

Surround yourself with positivity

Spending time with positive people such as family and close friends tends to ease stress levels and help improve your emotional well-being. These people are the ones that motivate, encourage and help you grow into the best version of yourself. They are the ones that have the most confidence in you to work towards and achieve your goals in life.

In conclusion, self-care is personal and what works for one may not necessarily work for another. It is important to look for things that keep you motivated, inspired and makes you feel alive. By becoming aware and taking care of yourself, you will feel better equipped to help others.
